The Horse of Hope is a project created by Roxie Hughes as an effort to raise funds and awareness for Children's Cancer Recovery Foundation. When Roxie’s grandson was diagnosed at age two with a brain tumor she wanted to find a way to help. She decided to take her loving horses out to events and collect donations by having patrons place handprints on her Horse of Hope. The handprints are a sign of love and support from people for the children battling cancer.
Roxie choose Children’s Cancer Recovery to be the recipient of those donations after her daughter told her of how much the organization helped the family, both financially and emotionally when her grandson was diagnosed. Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation is a 501C Non-Profit organization that supports children diagnosed with cancer. Through their programs their mission is to create smiles and inspire hope. Hope…something that these children so desperately need. It is that word that inspired Roxie to do more than just the Horse of Hope, she moved forward and created The Ride for Hope.
The Ride for Hope was created in 2011 as a family fun camping and horseback riding weekend in effort to raise both awareness and funding for childhood cancer. The event was a huge success that raised over $10,000 through the help of sponsors and patrons. This year the event will be held again June 8th-10th at the Juniata Saddle Club in Oakland Mills, PA. It is their hope to gather hundreds of people together for the weekend long fun filled family event and host riders and campers from throughout PA. Not your average trail riding weekend, The Ride for Hope is so much more than just a ride. It gathers riders and campers together to help support children battling cancer while enjoying a weekend full of activities.
Whether you like kicking up your heels to music with the live DJ or hanging out playing family fun games they got you covered. For you horse lovers they will host trail rides Saturday and Sunday that will take you through the beautiful countryside of central PA. You can join radio station WJUN during the Family Fun Day on Saturday. Kids will have the opportunity to enjoy obstacle courses, face painting, pony rides and yes even a magic show! Also for those who love a good deal they will have auctioneer Ken Hassinger Saturday night for their charity auction of donated goods. Best of all…fabulous food all weekend long! Pancake and sausage breakfast, oven roasted chicken dinner, a pig roast and so much more as they provide all your meals for the entire weekend. Join us by attending or donating so you can be part of The Ride for Hope and help make a difference in the life of a child with cancer. Childhood Cancer is something no child should face, especially not alone and Children's Cancer Recovery helps families financially so they can be where they are needed most, by their child's side.
